Course Objectives

1. Introduction to Scaffolding Labourers
- Scope of work and limitations
- Progression to CISRS Part 1 Scaffolder
- Importance of on-site experience
2. Scaffolding Components and Identification
- Tubes, boards, fittings, and ancillary items
- Proper storage, handling, and inspection
- Identification of component suitability and condition
3. Manual Handling Techniques (NASC SG6)
- Principles of kinetic lifting
- Factors affecting manual handling risks (LITE)
- Load characteristics
- Individual capabilities
- Task requirements
- Environmental conditions
- Proper techniques for:
- Lifting and carrying scaffold tubes
- Lifting and carrying scaffold boards
- Handling unequal/unbalanced loads
- Practical demonstrations and exercises
4. Hazard Recognition and Reporting
- Common scaffolding hazards
- Unsafe scaffolding components and practices
- Importance of clear communication
- Reporting procedures and documentation
5. Health, Safety, and Environmental Regulations
- Relevant legislation (e.g., HASAWA, PUWER, LOLER)
- Site safety rules and permit-to-work systems

Renewal Process
- COTS Course taken within 2 years
- CITB HS&E Test taken within 2 years (or accepted exemption)
Note: Scaffolding Labourers are not permitted to erect, alter, or dismantle scaffolding. If the employer deems the employee competent, they can issue a personal safety harness to enable work from a fully boarded platform with a single guardrail in place (SG4). However, the employer must provide specific SG4 personal safety harness training and retain a record of this training.
